Back in the day, before a woman becomes one’s bethrothed, a man would try to win her heart with a Harana, which is the art of wooing by way of song. Traditionally, the man, sometimes with his friends, comes by and serenades the woman underneath her window at night, with a guitar in hand and his heart on his sleeve. This popular way of courtship was prevalent in the early Spanish era of the Philippines, and the word ‘Harana’ even comes from a small Spanish guitar-like instrument bearing the same name - which ultimately explains why the guitar is the trusted instrument to accompany the voice. Although such a public display of adoration is now a rarity in this generation, Harana will forever remain a staple in Philippine love culture.
